"No state official — outside of the governor — touches the lives of the average Californian more than the insurance commissioner. The person stepping into the office of outgoing Commissioner Dave Jones for the next four years will have a big voice on the future of health, auto and homeowner insurance rates. The job requires a person who understands the need to balance consumer and business interests.

Steve Poizner, who would be the first independent to serve in a statewide office, is the best choice for voters on June 5. His record as insurance commissioner from 2007-11 was stellar. He followed through on his promise to keep politics out of the job and worked to make it a non-partisan position, as it should be. Poizner stood up for policy holders while also doing everything in his power to maintain a healthy insurance industry."

"None of his opponents come close to having his level of management experience.  The insurance commissioner manages the California Department of Insurance, which has more than 1,000 employees and a $250 million budget. Poizner cut the operating costs of the office by 15 percent while also efficiently investigating health insurance companies’ requests for higher rates.  Under his watch, the department meticulously reviewed Anthem Blue Cross’s filing for rate increases of up to 39 percent and found significant errors, forcing a double-digit reduction in the request."
